Rotate PDF Pages Online — Permanent Orientation Fix
A document scanner that feeds sheets in the wrong direction, a phone camera that
recorded landscape when you needed portrait, a contractor who emailed drawings rotated
90° — all of these leave you with a PDF where every viewer has to squint sideways.
Worse, fixing orientation inside Adobe Reader or a mobile app only changes your
display; the next person who opens the file still sees the wrong orientation. Our free
online PDF rotation tool solves this properly: it writes a permanent /Rotate
entry into the PDF's page dictionary, so every viewer on every device — desktop, phone,
tablet, printer — opens the corrected orientation automatically. No software to install,
no watermark, no account required.
Permanent /Rotate Metadata
Rotation is written into the PDF's page dictionary, not just your viewer. Every device opens the corrected orientation — no more squinting sideways.
Clockwise & Counter-Clockwise
Rotate any page or the whole document 90° right or 90° left. Accumulate clicks to reach 180° or 270° — and undo with one more click to return to 0°.
Per-Page or Bulk Control
Click a single thumbnail to fix just that page, or use the batch buttons to flip every page at once — essential for long scanned documents.
Zero Quality Loss
Rotation modifies only a small integer value — no images are re-encoded or resampled. A 10 MB scanned document stays 10 MB after rotation.
How to Rotate PDF Pages in 3 Steps
- Upload your PDF — drag the file onto the upload box, or click Select PDF to pick it from your device, Google Drive or Dropbox.
- Set the rotation — click any page thumbnail to rotate that page 90° clockwise; click again to reach 180° or 270°. Use the clockwise and counter-clockwise batch buttons to rotate all pages at once. The thumbnails update live so you see exactly what the finished document will look like before you commit.
- Apply and download — click Rotate Pages. The tool writes the corrected orientation metadata into the file and prepares your download in seconds. Save it to your device or back to cloud storage.
Persistent Rotation vs. View-Only Rotation — What's the Difference?
Most PDF viewers let you press a "rotate view" button, but this only tilts the display locally for your current session. Close and reopen the file and the page is sideways again. Send it to a colleague and they see the wrong orientation. This is because the viewer is not writing anything back into the file — it is just changing how your copy renders the content at that moment.
The PDF specification (
ISO 32000)
defines a /Rotate entry in each page dictionary that holds one of four
values: 0, 90, 180 or 270 (always clockwise from the base orientation). When our tool
saves the file, this value is set permanently. Every conforming viewer — Adobe Acrobat,
macOS Preview, Chrome's built-in PDF viewer, iOS Files, Android apps — reads that value
and renders the page in the right orientation, without the viewer needing any local
setting. This is the only way to fix a PDF's orientation for every reader, on every
device, forever.
If you only need to reorder or remove pages rather than rotate them, our Split PDF and Delete Pages tools handle those tasks.
Rotating Batch Scans — Fixing Every Other Page
A common scanner problem: you feed a stack of double-sided sheets, and every second page comes out upside-down because the scanner picks up the reverse side without flipping. A 100-page document can have 50 pages to fix — clicking each one individually would be tedious. Here is the most efficient workflow:
- Use the batch counter-clockwise or clockwise button to rotate all pages in one click, then individually click the already-correct pages to cancel their rotation — if there are fewer correct pages than wrong ones, this is faster.
- Or click each wrong page thumbnail. Two clicks per upside-down page sets it to 180°. The thumbnail updates immediately so you always know where you are.
- If your document has consistent alternating rotation (all even pages wrong, all odd pages correct), rotate all pages first to fix the even pages, then individually click the odd pages twice to undo their rotation back to 0°.
- After fixing orientation, you may want to merge the corrected document with a cover page, or compress the result if the scans are large.
Long scans also respond well to further processing: after rotating, consider running the file through PDF to Word if you need to extract or edit the text, or through PDF to JPG if you need individual page images.
What Happens to Form Fields, Links and Annotations After Rotation?
A PDF page is a coordinate system: position (0, 0) is the bottom-left corner, and
everything — text, images, links, form fields, comments — is placed at explicit x/y
coordinates within that system. When a page's /Rotate value changes,
PDF-conforming viewers transform the entire coordinate system accordingly. This means
that in a well-formed PDF, interactive elements rotate with the content and stay
correctly positioned relative to the page.
- Hyperlinks and internal page-jump links move with their anchor rectangles and keep working.
- Interactive form fields (AcroForm text boxes, checkboxes, signatures) are repositioned by the viewer in line with the rotated coordinate space.
- Comments and stamps placed as annotations follow the same transformation.
- Digital signatures — a cryptographic signature covers the entire byte stream of the file. Writing a new
/Rotatevalue changes that byte stream, so the signature is invalidated. Rotate first, then re-sign. Drawn "wet" signatures (images or stamp annotations) are unaffected. - Malformed PDFs — very old or non-conforming documents occasionally hard-code coordinates in ways that assume a fixed orientation. Annotations may appear misaligned after rotation in those rare cases. Use our Edit PDF tool to reposition them if needed.
Clockwise vs. Counter-Clockwise — Which Angle Do You Need?
The PDF /Rotate entry always specifies clockwise degrees. Here is a quick
reference for the most common orientation problems:
| Problem you see | Rotation to apply | Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Page is upside down (180° wrong) | 180° clockwise | Two clicks on the thumbnail |
| Portrait scan rotated 90° left (text runs up the left side) | 90° clockwise | One click Most common |
| Portrait scan rotated 90° right (text runs down the right side) | 270° clockwise (= 90° counter-clockwise) | Three clicks, or use the CCW button |
| Landscape page that should be portrait | 90° clockwise or 270° clockwise depending on which edge is "up" | Check the thumbnail after one click |
If you are unsure which direction to rotate, click once and watch the thumbnail update. Click again if the first rotation went the wrong way. No data is lost at any point — you can keep clicking until the page looks right, then proceed.
For documents that also have size issues, you may want to compress them afterwards, or use Add Page Numbers to make long rotated reports easier to navigate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the rotation permanent or just a viewer setting?
Permanent. The tool writes a /Rotate entry into each affected page dictionary inside the PDF file (per ISO 32000). Every viewer on every device opens the corrected orientation automatically — there is no viewer-side setting involved.
Can I rotate just one page while leaving the others untouched?
Yes. Click the thumbnail of the individual page you want to fix. Pages you do not click are untouched. This is perfect for a long document where only one or two pages were scanned sideways.
Does rotating a PDF change its file size?
Virtually not. Rotation only modifies a small integer value in each page's dictionary — no images are re-encoded or resampled. A 10 MB scanned PDF will still be approximately 10 MB after rotation. If you need to reduce the file size, use our Compress PDF tool after rotating.
What happens to form fields, links and annotations after rotation?
PDF-compliant viewers transform the coordinate space of annotations along with the page content when reading the /Rotate value, so links, form fields and comments stay correctly positioned. Cryptographic digital signatures are invalidated (rotate first, then re-sign). Rare malformed PDFs may show annotation misalignment — use Edit PDF to fix them.
How do I fix a batch of scanned pages where every other page is upside down?
Click each upside-down page thumbnail twice to apply 180°. Alternatively, rotate all pages 180° using the batch button, then click each already-correct page twice to undo it — whichever group is smaller requires fewer clicks.
Can I rotate counter-clockwise, not just clockwise?
Yes. Batch buttons for both clockwise and counter-clockwise rotation are available for all-page rotation. For individual pages, clicking three times clockwise (270°) achieves the same result as one step counter-clockwise (90° CCW).
What is the maximum file size and page count?
Free users can upload PDFs up to 50 MB with no hard page-count ceiling. Pro users can upload files up to 500 MB, covering high-resolution architectural drawings and lengthy legal filings. If you need to reduce file size before uploading, try Compress PDF first.
Can I rotate a password-protected PDF?
If the PDF has an owner password blocking edits, remove it first with our Unlock PDF tool, then rotate the pages. If you want to re-protect the corrected file, use Protect PDF afterwards.
