How to Rotate PDF Pages in 3 Steps

Persistent Rotation vs. View-Only Rotation — What's the Difference?

Most PDF viewers let you press a "rotate view" button, but this only tilts the display locally for your current session. Close and reopen the file and the page is sideways again. Send it to a colleague and they see the wrong orientation. This is because the viewer is not writing anything back into the file — it is just changing how your copy renders the content at that moment.

The PDF specification ( ISO 32000) defines a /Rotate entry in each page dictionary that holds one of four values: 0, 90, 180 or 270 (always clockwise from the base orientation). When our tool saves the file, this value is set permanently. Rotating Batch Scans — Fixing Every Other Page

A common scanner problem: you feed a stack of double-sided sheets, and every second page comes out upside-down because the scanner picks up the reverse side without flipping. A 100-page document can have 50 pages to fix — clicking each one individually would be tedious. Here is the most efficient workflow:

• Use the batch counter-clockwise or clockwise button to rotate all pages in one click, then individually click the already-correct pages to cancel their rotation — if there are fewer correct pages than wrong ones, this is faster.
• Or click each wrong page thumbnail. Two clicks per upside-down page sets it to 180°. The thumbnail updates immediately so you always know where you are.
• If your document has consistent alternating rotation (all even pages wrong, all odd pages correct), rotate all pages first to fix the even pages, then individually click the odd pages twice to undo their rotation back to 0°.
• After fixing orientation, you may want to merge the corrected document with a cover page, or compress the result if the scans are large.

Long scans also respond well to further processing: after rotating, consider running the file through PDF to Word if you need to extract or edit the text, or through PDF to JPG if you need individual page images.

What Happens to Form Fields, Links and Annotations After Rotation?

A PDF page is a coordinate system: position (0, 0) is the bottom-left corner, and everything — text, images, links, form fields, comments — is placed at explicit x/y coordinates within that system. When a page's /Rotate value changes, PDF-conforming viewers transform the entire coordinate system accordingly. This means that in a well-formed PDF, interactive elements rotate with the content and stay correctly positioned relative to the page.

• Hyperlinks and internal page-jump links move with their anchor rectangles and keep working.
• Interactive form fields (AcroForm text boxes, checkboxes, signatures) are repositioned by the viewer in line with the rotated coordinate space.
• Comments and stamps placed as annotations follow the same transformation.
• Digital signatures — a cryptographic signature covers the entire byte stream of the file. Writing a new /Rotate value changes that byte stream, so the signature is invalidated. Rotate first, then re-sign. Drawn "wet" signatures (images or stamp annotations) are unaffected.
• Malformed PDFs — very old or non-conforming documents occasionally hard-code coordinates in ways that assume a fixed orientation. Annotations may appear misaligned after rotation in those rare cases. Use our Edit PDF tool to reposition them if needed.

Clockwise vs. Counter-Clockwise — Which Angle Do You Need?

The PDF /Rotate entry always specifies clockwise degrees. Here is a quick reference for the most common orientation problems:

If you are unsure which direction to rotate, click once and watch the thumbnail update. Click again if the first rotation went the wrong way. No data is lost at any point — you can keep clicking until the page looks right, then proceed.
