Open Password vs. Owner Password — What Gets Removed

PDF security uses two conceptually different passwords, and knowing which you have determines what "unlocking" actually does:

A document can carry both passwords simultaneously. If it does, enter the owner password — that grants the highest privilege and lets you remove all restrictions in one step. If you only have the open password, the tool will decrypt the file so it opens freely, though permission restrictions set by a separate owner password may remain. Encryption Explained: RC4, AES-128 and AES-256

Every encrypted PDF is locked with one of three algorithms. The strength of the algorithm affects how hard it would be to brute-force the password — it does not affect whether PDF Awesome can remove the encryption once you supply the correct password:

• RC4-40 and RC4-128 — used by Acrobat 3 (PDF 1.1) through Acrobat 5 (PDF 1.4). RC4-40 is now considered weak and is rarely seen on newer documents.
• AES-128 — introduced in Acrobat 6 / PDF 1.5. A significant improvement over RC4; still in widespread use for documents created in the 2000s and early 2010s.
• AES-256 — the current standard, introduced in Acrobat 9 / PDF 1.7 Extension Level 3 and now part of PDF 2.0 (ISO 32000-2). Used by modern Word-to-PDF conversions, Google Workspace exports, and any document protected in Acrobat X or later.

Limitations: What This Tool Cannot Do

Being clear about limitations is as important as listing features. There are two things PDF Awesome's unlocker cannot do:

• It cannot recover a forgotten password. The tool decrypts the PDF after you prove ownership by supplying the correct password. It does not attempt to guess, brute-force or crack an unknown password. If you have genuinely forgotten the password to your own document and have no record of it, you will need specialized recovery software that runs locally on your machine.
• It cannot remove a permissions password without the password itself. Even though a permissions-protected PDF is readable without a password, the restriction flags are stored in an encrypted permissions block that can only be cleared by providing the owner password. No legitimate online tool can bypass this without the correct credential.

Online Unlock vs. Desktop Software
